Dear Sixtyplusurfers
I’ve just heard that my poem, ‘The Dance Of Life’ has won The Harrow Times Poetry Competition for January 2024.
The poem is also included in my 74 poem collection, ‘Dancing For England’ which is available to buy from TSL Publications www.tslbooks.uk
I would be delighted if you could include the poem in Sixtyplusurfers.
The Dance Of Life
Still, she hears her husband’s voice,
‘Get out. Meet people. Find someone new.
Perhaps consider getting a dog?
When I’m dead, don’t sit there, feeling blue.’
Now, he is and she’s paying the price
Of loving him for forty years.
‘Remember the good times.’ She tells herself.
‘The love and laughter. No more tears.’
Although she knows she will survive
Alternative? Suicide? madness?
Watching other couples dance,
She’s overcome with sadness.
But knowing, now, that pain and joy
Dance together – partners in crime
She’ll do the dance of life again
with both – just one more time.
Melville Lovatt, Harrow
Dear Melville

Hi! I’m Gemma. I live in Cornwall with my three cats.
I live in a very quiet area with a lovely garden and not too far from moors and beaches.
In my spare time I really just enjoy getting outdoors and going for a walk or curling up cosy reading a book – if the weather isn’t co-operating!
I am sending some pictures of my cats because who doesn’t love a cat photo?
Gemma Barber, Cornwall
Dear Gemma
Thank you for sending in your gorgeous cat photos. They have really cheered up our Letters page.
I can see that Christmas was a lovely time, when one of your cats was wearing a cute red bandana. And I do like your little cat sofa. It looks so comfy.

This is Conroy. He used to belong to our neighbour however they could not keep him so we took him in March 2023. He is six years old.
He is so adorable and loving, he settled with us so well. He now has a lovely life and gets lots of cuddles.
Alison Veasey, Isle Of Man
Dear Alison
Thank you for sending in your picture of Conroy. He is a beautiful cat.
How lovely to take him in from your neighbour. He seems very happy.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
When they brought Cupcake from the shelter, it was supposed to be fostering after his surgery. They told me he was a senior asked if I wanted to see a photo, but it didn’t matter to me what he looked like. They and I knew that if it worked out with the cats, he would stay. He stayed.
They also told me he was a Pekingese mix, but looking at the breeds chart at the vet, he looked to be a Tibetan Spaniel. They were bred to guard the Buddhist temples. And yes, he was calm, quiet, and Zen.
He was about nine years old when he came, and he changed my life. Once we started going to the dog park, little Cupcake set off running with the two greyhounds, and I started to meet people in this town where I had lived for two years and still didn’t know anyone.
Besides the neighbourhood walks, we also went out to the country and often walked on the nearby section of the Camino de Santiago. When he died last May at the age of 16, he took a piece of my heart with him.
I wrote a book, a memoir, and in it I talk about Cupcake, and Minnie and Felix, the two cats I also rescued because they were all important in my life.
The book is ‘No Regrets: A Life in Catalonia’, and you can find it in paperback or as an eBook on Amazon
Dvora Treisman
Dear Dvora
Thank you for telling us about your beautiful dog, Cupcake and sharing your photos. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss.
It sounds like you gave him a wonderful home and a very happy life, and that Cupcake brought you lots of happiness.
Well done for writing a memoir about your life in Catalonia with Cupcake, Minnie and Felix.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
I know a lot of people have traditions they do at Christmas, but I wonder if anyone has traditions at New Year?
I have a tradition I have done every year as Big Ben gongs start. I open the back door which lets the old year out and then open the front door to let the New Year in. This is a tradition that I have carried on since I lived at home which my mum used to do .
I also do another tradition from when my daughter visited Egypt in 2000. She bought me a white candle with 2000 on it in red which she got from Jerusalem.
As the gongs start, I light the candle for 5 minutes or so until the gongs stop, and the light reminds me of people we have lost especially that year, and is a light to light up the way for the New Year.
My daughter and granddaughter have started the tradition too. Here are our candles lit. Grace is the red one.
Marie Evans
Dear Marie
Thank you for letting us know your family traditions for the New Year.
That must be very moving for you to light candles for people that you have lost, but also optimistic to light up the way for a New Year.

Sixtyplusurfers Competition
Win Afternoon Tea
at Principal York
Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Principal York to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a delicious Chocolate Themed Afternoon Tea for Four People.
Whether it be friends or family you decide to bring along for tea, join the hotel in paying homage to the city’s sweet history. Standing proudly just steps from the city’s bustling train station, Principal York provides the perfect location to explore all the riches of what was once known as ‘the chocolate city’.
Opened in 1878, the hotel is the Grande Dame of York, an iconic feature welcoming travellers with its grand yellow Scarborough brick façade for almost 150 years.
The afternoon tea menu comprises five chocolatey treats inspired by famous York chocolatiers. Indulge in cakes, brownies and macaroons with orange, mint, nutty, and creamy flavours, all accompanied by the “Big One” – a purple brioche crumb choux sharing bun, filled with hazelnut and caramel.
Savoury lovers can enjoy tasty classic cut finger sandwiches filled with the finest salmon, eggs, ham or cheese from local Yorkshire suppliers. Epitomising tradition, a choice of freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and preserves, alongside whichever hot beverage is desired make up the remainder of the selection. It wouldn’t feel right to call it afternoon tea without these essentials after all!
Upon entering Principal York it is impossible not to marvel at the hotel’s interior, designed by award-winning architects Goddard Littlefair, combining late-Victorian majesty with contemporary comforts. From the awe-inspiring cast iron staircase and highly glazed original Victorian floors to the sweeping landscaped gardens, Principal York is a timeless, elegant retreat in the heart of the city.
Take a seat and indulge with views of sweeping manicured lawns all the way to the Minster, The grandeur of Principal York’s Garden Room is a very fitting location to celebrate the Great British Afternoon Tea tradition, once visited by Queen Victoria herself!
Principal York’s contemporary feel laced with history extends throughout the graceful 155-room hotel showcasing the experience of splendour from time gone by, whether in a sleek classic room, elegant deluxe room or luxurious suite. Each room is packed full of character and relaxing charm.
Guests seeking a relaxing, wellness break away can double down with a fully equipped gym, 13m swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam and sauna all to explore and take comfort.
Just a stone’s throw away from exploring the vibrantly modern festival city with its Roman and Viking roots speaking to its rich history. Lively eateries, independent shops in cobbled streets with outstanding historical architecture and world-class museums celebrating everything from chocolate to art – at Principal York the possibilities are endless.
This Mother’s Day, the hotel will be serving all the established culinary charms listed with a complimentary glass of fizz also on offer to celebrate the day the right way.

Our Star Letter
Dear Sixtyplusurfers
We moved into our new home two years ago, a delightful 1880s mid-terrace cottage in the heart of a small market town in Cumbria.
Despite being an avid amateur gardener, the major compromise for me when buying the property was the only outside space being a snug 1 metre x 3 metre triangular flagged patch of land underneath the kitchen window, and adjacent to a busy public footpath.
There are several challenges with the space, aside from the size, as it’s on a shady north-facing aspect receiving a maximum of 15 minutes direct sunlight per day (even in the height of Summer) and is frequently ‘watered’ by passing pooches.
Convinced I could invite some greenery, colour and wildlife into this neglected area, I immediately set to work to transform the tiny space into a miniature garden display.
The photograph at the top shows how it looked in November 2022, after clearing away a self-seeded oak sapling from the stone trough. I also set to work filling the discarded Belfast sink with spring bulbs.
By March 2023, we had begun to see a bit more life emerging from the few promising pots as you can see in the photograph.
In May 2023, the fern fronds began to unfurl, and the geraniums added some instant greenery and a fantastic scent for passers by to enjoy.
Then in August 2023, we saw a complete transformation from the formerly dank, dull and drab space.
With the addition of a small wildlife pond using an old casserole dish and a garden fairy hiding amongst the foliage.
I hope this inspires others to transform their outdoor spaces, no matter how small!
Hannah Baldwin, Cumbria
Dear Hannah
Thank you for writing in and telling us about your garden transformation. You have done so well creating a beautiful little garden with a pond and so much colour and interest.
It is lovely to see your before and after photographs. I hope you enjoy watching things grow throughout the Spring and Summer. And seeing the wildlife visit your pond.
Your letter is very inspiring to other gardeners and anyone with small spaces. You can even enjoy indoor plants if you don’t have a garden!
We are delighted to tell you that you are the winner of the Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter Competition.
Your prize is Flapjackery Mega Box and Jute Tote Bag.

We celebrated Christmas with my son and partner who flew in from San Francisco and my 94 year old dad.
It was wonderful to all be together and we all cherished the moment appreciating that dad/grandpa won’t be here forever.
Simple fun including silly games, cryptic crosswords and short walks.
Anna Gleave, Weymouth
Dear Anna
Thank you for sharing your picture of your father at Christmas. It sounds as if you had so much fun all being together.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
We recently went to Hidcote Manor, a beautiful arts and crafts garden in the Cotswolds.
As you can see it has beautiful gardens that were created by the horticulturalist and plant collector, Major Lawrence Johnston.
It also has Winthrop’s Café – a lovely little restaurant inside the garden with indoor and outdoor seating, selling drinks, cakes, and light lunches.
There’s also a handy Plant Centre, and I couldn’t resist buying a few plants for my garden.
I would recommend a visit if you are in the Cotswolds.
Hidcote Manor is near Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire.
Graham Morton, Swindon
Dear Graham
Thank you for writing in and telling us about your visit to Hidcote Manor. It looks lovely, what a great photo.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
After dieting for – it must be 30 years or so – since having my children, I finally decided it was time to stop!
Yoyo dieting hasn’t particularly made me lose weight, just tired and miserable.
So now I am eating when I’m hungry and enjoying the pleasure of good food. I love going out for meals with my family and children and am looking forward to a Mother’s Day tea in a hotel with my family.
Eating what I fancy has made me happier. And oddly, my weight has not changed at all. It has settled down and I have more energy and feel more contented.
I try and exercise and go for walks. But dieting, fasting and faddy diets had to stop.
I am accepting myself for what I am and enjoying life and food finally. I would encourage other readers to do the same.
Linda, Manchester
Dear Linda
Good for you! Dieting can make you very unhappy. I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day tea with your family.

To celebrate our Spring March April 2024 issue, Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Gibsons Games, to offer one lucky reader who joins the Sixtyplusurfers Newsletter mailing list or recommends a friend to receive it the chance to win a Wildflower Garden Jigsaw Puzzle by Claire Comerford.
In this beautiful scene a bright country garden is beaming with life. In the background families are flocking to a garden teahouse for a glass of cold lemonade. Whether you are a wildlife lover or simply enjoy putting together a colourful jigsaw, this one is for you.
This beautiful 500 piece puzzle has been painted by Claire Comerford. Talented artist, Claire Comerford has been painting and drawing for the best part of 25 years and couldn’t imagine doing anything else!
She loves all things flora and fauna and would say the biggest inspiration for her art is the time she spends in her back garden and the stunning Yorkshire countryside that surrounds her studio.
As with all Gibsons jigsaws, this high quality puzzle is made with 100% recycled puzzle board. The beautifully illustrated pieces are designed to fit perfectly together; in fact, Gibsons uses the thickest puzzle board on the market.
Gibsons have made some positive changes to their processes, so you can be sure you’re getting the same great puzzles and know they are kinder to the environment. Not only does the box have a fresh new look, but they have used biodegradable clear labels to secure the lid instead of shrink wrap, reducing their plastic waste. They use vegetable-based inks too. The gloss coating on the box gives extra protection and the puzzle pieces are stored in a plastic bag that can be recycled by most councils.
Because the box is slightly smaller than their previous designs, they need less room to transport their products which reduces their carbon footprint and means you can store your puzzles more easily. Gibsons have also popped an artwork poster inside for you to reference while you piece together your lovely jigsaw puzzle.
Wildflower Garden from Gibsons Games has 500 pieces and has an RRP of £11.50.
