Sixtyplusurfers reader, Maggi Dignam has sent in a picture of her adorable puppy, Pep. She tells us the story of how she got him and how he has brightened up her life.

“My husband kept asking what I wanted for my 70th birthday,” explains Maggi, “and I genuinely couldn’t think of anything.

“In the finish he asked me that many times that I finally said, “Oh buy me a dog”…..

“As we’d been married for 53 years without a pet apart from the occasional goldfish, I thought I’d managed to shut him up.

“However, my beautiful granddaughter who was in Christies Hospital undergoing treatment was told what I’d said and in her usual no nonsense way, within two days had found me the most beautiful puppy called Pep.

“I fell in love with him instantly and the difference he has made to our lives is beyond anything.

“My husband has lost him a couple of times but he’s been warned if he loses my boy again there won’t be a 54th wedding anniversary….!”

We would like to wish Maggi a very Happy 70th Birthday and thank you for sending in your adorable photograph of your new puppy, Pep. He has really brightened up our Pet Care page.

And what a lovely story, about how your granddaughter was so kind and clever to find you such a beautiful dog. What a wonderful present!

Dora’s Diary

A Monthly Dog Blog

Dora's Diary

Hello everyone. I hope everything’s tickety-boo with you all.

With Easter upon us, thoughts turn to eggs especially of the chocolate variety. Mmm… I have to confess to having a liking for chocolate. But I’m only ever allowed a doggy choc treat as the real stuff can be poisonous for us canines.

Bossman’s always had an affinity for eggs – that is the edible type laid by chickens. Maybe it’s something to do with when he was born. At the time his mum went into labour with him, she’d been watching a film starring Fred MacMurray, called ‘The Egg and I’. You could call that a cracking start to his life!

Bossman can certainly look back at a life littered with egg-related incidents. As a four-year-old lad, he and his parents were living in Cyprus. One Easter, they decided to have a picnic up in the Troodos mountains with some of their Greek Cyprian neighbours and their children.

It turned out to be a memorable picnic as the adults had painted a clutch of hard-boiled eggs in reds, blues and greens and then hidden them in the woods for the kids to go on a treasure hunt to find them. Bossman found the most. Trust him.

Liking eggs does mean a link to where they come from. So, no surprise, chickens have featured fully in Bossman’s life with his dad cultivating that interest. They used to live in Bournemouth with a small back garden sloping up from their bungalow, dominated by a couple of apple trees. No room to rear chickens? Wrong. Bossman’s dad managed to construct a chicken coop which integrated the lower branches of the apple trees as part of a two-tier roosting and laying quarters.

It became the happy home of six Rhode Island Red chickens, and so the family were the happy recipients of daily fresh eggs. Bossman’s dad kept a log of the number of eggs laid each day and also pencilled the date laid on each shell. If he could have labelled them with the actual hen that had produced them, I’m sure he would have done so.

In echoes of the Cyprian painted eggs, Bossman did one Easter, construct a tableau for his parents as a present. In the centre, a chocolate Easter egg from Woolworths wrapped in silver foil. Around it he arranged several of his dad’s eggs, nestling in grass clippings from the compost heap; and wedged between them five fluffy yellow toy chicks (also from Woolworths), their pipe-cleaner legs bent at right-angles to ensure they didn’t topple over. Ah… How sweet.

King Edward I of England presented his royal household with similar Easter gifts though on a much grander scale: 450 eggs coloured and decorated with gold-leaf. No Woolworths around in those days.

Bossman’s egg-interest followed him into practice once he’d qualified as a vet. When he moved to a small holding with seven acres it simply cried out to have some chickens strutting round and producing those fresh eggs he always yearned for.

It was his wife, Maxeen and daughter, Rebecca, who actually set the ball (or rather the egg) rolling. Between them they levered an old shed into what had once been a dog run with a high mesh fence surrounding it. An ideal pen for hens, safe from foxie. Four at-the-point-of-lay hens were purchased and named: Martha, Mabel, Matilda and Mavis. Rebecca’s four Ms. And those hens duly discharged their duty: fresh eggs every day. No, Bossman didn’t pencil the production dates on their shells like his dad did. He merely relished their contents.

Until that fateful morning when he went out to the chicken run to discover that a fox had managed to climb over the six-foot fence and somehow nosed open the shed door. The four Ms had been chased out into the pen, there to be slaughtered by decapitation, their bodies strewn round the run as evidence of their massacre. Understandably, such an upsetting scene meant the cessation of further hen keeping.

With regard to the continuation of any Easter tradition, well Bossman doesn’t present his wife with anything remotely resembling the Faberge Easter egg presented by the Russian Czar, Alexander III to his wife. That was made of gold and white enamel inside of which there was a golden yolk containing a golden hen with ruby eyes.

Maxeen will just be happy with the large chocolate egg stuffed with truffles that he’ll get for her.

I’ll also be happy, providing I get one (or two or three) of my doggy choc treats. They will barely touch the sides as I woof them down. Followed by much smacking of lips.

Yummy. Yummy.

Love & licks from Dora xx

Pet Sitting Boosts Wellbeing

Homesitting for
the Over 60s

Susan Ferguson

Forget putting on the slippers and early bedtimes! With the cost of living pushing many Brits to work past retirement age, the traditional image of retirement feels out of date.

Many retirees today crave meaningful, flexible work opportunities that offer purpose and adventure. Research from Rest Less, an online community for older workers, found that 446,601 people over 70 remained in the workforce last year – a 61% increase since 2012.

While many continue in their previous careers, others are seeking something fresh, something with more travel and freedom, which is why many are turning to home and pet sitting.

Homesitters Ltd, a leading home and pet sitting agency reports a surge in demand for responsible and reliable individuals to care for homes and beloved pets while owners are away.

“Pet ownership has reached record highs, and with travel firmly back on the agenda, our homesitters are in more demand than ever,” says Ben Irvine, Director of Operations at Homesitters Ltd.

“We actively recruit mature and responsible individuals looking to earn money while enjoying animal companionship and exploring different parts of the UK.”

More than just matchmaking, Homesitters Ltd prioritises peace of mind for both homeowners and their sitters. Prior to each assignment, they arrange introductory meetings to ensure a perfect fit, and provide comprehensive insurance for their homesitters as well as support throughout the assignment.

Susan Ferguson, a retiree from Hornsea in West Yorkshire is reaping the benefits of homesitting. After years managing a mental health service, Susan retired in 2016, determined to stay active and give back to her community. Volunteering as a watch keeper and at a charity shop kept her busy, but a love for animals and a desire for an extra income drew her to homesitting.

A national newspaper article introduced Susan to Homesitters Ltd, the perfect fit for her active lifestyle and passion for animals. “I enjoy long walks, fresh air, and being around various creatures,” she says. “With my agriculture degree, the more rural stays are especially rewarding.”

Since her first assignment in 2018, Susan has completed more than 10 assignments, building regular clients and a special bond with three cocker spaniels who hold a special place in her heart. Homesitting also offers unexpected benefits. “It’s not the main reason, but saving money on bills is a lovely perk,” Susan admits.

Susan also isn’t afraid to embrace new experiences. Before each assignment, she visits the area, researching local attractions and getting a feel for the place. One of her recent adventures featured a unique menagerie: a Cavapoochon dog, a Persian cat, tropical fish, an axolotl (which she had to Google!), and even a crested gecko!

For Susan, Homesitters is more than just an agency; it’s a supportive community. “They’re a lovely company, always there for me. Knowing I have someone on the phone if needed is very comforting.”

With the cost of living pushing the boundaries of traditional retirement, homesitting offers a compelling alternative.

John Charlick, Homesitters

Whether you are seeking some pet-loving companionship, the freedom to explore, or a financial boost, homesitting could be the key to unlocking a fulfilling post-career chapter.

Easter Pet Advice

PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing with a dog at a Pet Hospital

PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing gives
her advice for Easter pet care

With Easter around the corner, PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing shares some essential safety advice for choc-lovers who have furry friends in the house.

“Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is perfectly safe for humans, but toxic for dogs, cats and rabbits.

Ginger, brown and white cat with PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing

“The seriousness of chocolate poisoning depends on how much chocolate your pet has eaten, how big they are, and the cocoa content of the chocolate – the darker the chocolate the more toxic it is for your pet.”

“Symptoms of chocolate poisoning usually appear within two to four hours but can take up to 12 hours.

Vet Nurses Nina Downing and Shauna Spooner checking dog's heart rate

“In severe cases, toxicity can cause:

Fast breathing or panting

Shaking, trembling and tremors

High temperature (fever)

Seizures

A fast heart rate

High blood pressure

“The most severe cases of chocolate poisoning in pets can lead to heart failure, coma and even death. Although this is rare this is why it’s really important to keep chocolate safely away from prying paws.

Close-up dog in consult at PDSA

“This is especially important during festivities such as Easter when there’s likely to be more chocolate than usual in the house, with over 80 million Easter eggs sold in the UK each year.

“At our Pet Hospitals, Apomorphine, a treatment used for chocolate and raisin toxicity sees an average increase in use of 23% around Easter. At the higher end, it can cost as much as £300 to treat a dog for chocolate poisoning.

“If you are concerned your pet may be suffering from chocolate poisoning, keep the packaging and call your vet immediately.”

Vet Your Clothes for PDSA

Vet Your Clothes to Help the PDSA

PDSA Assistant Shop Manager in the charity shop

Celebrities and influencers are clearing out their wardrobes to help pets in need.

Vet charity, PDSA, have re-launched their UK-wide campaign, Vet Your Clothes – to raise awareness of shopping pre-loved by having a purposeful clear out, and donating items to its charity outlets.

Fearne Cotton

from her wardrobe to the PDSA

PDSA supporters, and animal lovers, Fearne Cotton and Sarah Jayne Dunn have taken on the challenge and vetted their own clothes.

Both celebrities have each donated an item from their wardrobe that they no longer need to PDSA.

PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing says, “All items sold at our shops go towards funding vital veterinary treatment and supporting pet owners experiencing financial hardship who have nowhere else to turn.

“Our shops desperately need donations to help fund life-saving care for pets in need. A little goes a really long way, with just £5 paying for a biopsy punch tool, which our vets use to take samples to help diagnose and treat a poorly pet.

Black cat at PDSA Manchester Pet Hospital

“When you see poorly pets at our Pet Hospitals getting the life-saving treatment they need, you start to see every pre-loved item donated as medicine, care and love, which is provided by our hardworking vet teams at our Pet Hospitals.”

£3 – would pay for a small bottle of a local anaesthetic to provide essential pain relief to a much-loved pet during dental procedures and minor surgery.

£5 – would pay for a biopsy punch tool to take samples that help our vets diagnose and treat a poorly pet.

£10 – will pay towards a vet nurse to clean and dress an injured pet’s wound, meaning they can recover at home with their loving family

£15 – would pay for a box of 100 disposable gloves for vet teams to use when treating much-loved pets.

£20 – will pay for a tube of antibiotic eye drops to treat poorly pets suffering with eye infections

Items can be donated to PDSA’s charity shops, with over 110 shops across the country.
